Media arts internship April 3 - 5, 2015

April 3

Started my podcast prep for this weekend. We’re planning on doing a longer show, so I put out a call for listener questions and topic ideas. I also began research on topic and question ideas. Our March Madness tournament bracket needed to be updated for the final matchup, so I did that as well.

April 4

Continued preparing for the 2015 season preview podcast by researching topics and gathering listener questions. Also update the Spring Training roster infographic for the final time.

April 5

Finalized the notes for the podcast recording, prepped the new show music, and recorded the podcast. Edited the last bit of audio I had from recording in Florida. Created the Spring Training roster infographic post.

Media arts internship March 25 - 27, 2015

March 25

I edited and converted to .mp3s some the audio I had recorded at Spring Training. I took several short recordings, then took some really long ones. I combined the smaller ones which were all from batting practice. I had another longer one that I kept by itself and then I had one that combined two sessions that were about 2-3 minutes long.

March 26

We completed the third round of the March Madness tournament, so I needed to update the bracket with the results for the fourth round. I then put together a post for the audio files I had put together.

March 27

Updated the Spring Training infographic as three players had recently been sent down. I then began podcast preparation. Started the podcast post and began researching topics for the show.

I finished the Spring Training roster graphic:

I still need to go back and make sure that all the names are spelled correctly and make sure everything is aligned correctly.

I also updated the bracket graphic we use for our March Madness series that runs through Spring Training. It’s a fun event that helps our community get through Spring Training, while learning a little bit about each player. We have two players faceoff against each by reader vote. The player with the most votes after a 24-hour period advances to the next round. I’ve run it the last two years, but handed it off to someone else this year so that I could focus on my media arts internship. However, I’ll be doing the graphics for the event. That includes updating the graphic and creating the images for use with the posts.

The bracket is the first thing that needs to be done, because it gives us the matchups for the posts. This year I decided to seed them by last years results and sprinkle all the new acquisitions into the bracket. Because I was using the graphic from last year all I had to do was click on each spot and type in the new name for that spot. I then had to get the dates for each round and update them at the top.

I of course need to go back through this one as well and tighten up alignment and any fix any spelling errors.

Tonight I edited and uploaded the third and final hour of audio for our TCB Top 30 Astros Prospect special. I also updated the RSS feed with the information for the second hour, which will release Wednesday. I then started the graphics work on my infographic for our Top 30. This is what I have so far:

I am using a gradient for the background. It starts orange at the top and shifts to blue at the bottom. I added a texture to the background at the suggestion of the graphics artist on staff Ryan Dunsmore. I used a picture of some ground at the Astros Spring Training that my daughter took while we were there last year. I had to duplicate it to get it the full length of the infographic and then drop the opacity. Now that I have the design I just need to fill in the other 24 names, which I plan to work on Wednesday.
